Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
