Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
