The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
