Working Life of Income Insufficient for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Report Finds

According to recent research, the average employee in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of earnings to reach the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Economic Disparity Through the Years

The study examined financial assets information from the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in the mid-2000s, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to reach the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead involved with the analysis stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The study revealed that the difference between the assets of the median citizen and an individual in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3m in real terms by recent times.

The analyst added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is restricted – people that start life well-off tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide growing in actual numbers, the percentage of complete net worth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," as stated in the analysis.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, through rising house prices and changes in pension valuations, were the primary factors of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, per the study.

These appreciations typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – worsening the intergenerational wealth divide.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Regional Disparities

Additionally, there were pronounced area-based disparities, with the median value of assets in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110,000 in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the information reveals countless homes were able to save, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their available funds rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the report finds.
